Review of MakeSpace On Demand Storage

Who Is MakeSpace?

MakeSpace storage is a storage company based in New York City. The company takes a modern approach to self-storage. In 2012, co-founder Rahul Gandhi’s life flipped upside down. Hurricane Sandy hit New York, causing him to lose his apartment. With no apartment, Gandhi had to find a secure place to store his personal belongings.

Already distraught from the storm’s impact, his search for a storage unit only added to his problems. He was shocked by the prices for storage in crude metal containers and dusty buildings. As a lifelong entrepreneur, Gandhi recognized an opportunity. He wanted to innovate the storage industry.

In 2013 MakeSpace was founded with a mission to create a customer-first company that is cheaper and more efficient than other storage companies. Using his technology background, he began to brainstorm how modern technology could improve the industry and lower costs.

After raising funds, the real work began. MakeSpace’s first location was in New York City, and by 2015 MakeSpace had set up shop in three cities. The idea caught fire, gaining financial support from Ashton Kutcher and Carmelo Anthony. Today, the company has 24 locations and counting!

What Do They Do?

MakeSpace offers affordable storage units starting at $39 a month. The price may be higher or lower, depending on which city you reside in. The price is locked down. You won’t get an email saying you’re being charged an extra $20 next month. MakeSpace stands by their prices, a rare trait in the storage industry.

One of the worst aspects of storage companies is getting your items there safely. If you don’t have a truck, you need to rent one unless you want to spend a day making short trips. Fortunately, you don’t need a car with MakeSpace. Their team of professional movers will pack and pick up your items. They load their vehicle and bring them directly to your storage unit. Both packing and moving are entirely free!

Once your things are secured at your local MakePlace, how do you retrieve them? Traditionally, you would go to your storage unit, remove your rusty key from your pocket, and search through boxes until you found what you needed. MakePlace believed this was an outdated process, so they developed an app to solve the problem.

When you need to retrieve something from storage, you just get on your phone. The movers have already taken photos of each item you sent, allowing you to see your entire inventory from the app. Just open the app, pick out what you want, and tell MakeSpace when you want it delivered. Their team grabs your item, packs it, and brings it directly to your door.

How Are They Different?

Self-storage is a necessity. No one looks forward to going to a self-storage unit on their day off. But MakeSpace has changed that for good. From their business practices to their storage solutions, everything has been made more enjoyable and less time-consuming.

On the business side, they offer affordable units with locked-in monthly rates. They understand customer needs aren’t one size fits all, so you only pay for the storage you need. They offer eight storage sizes from a 2′ by 2′ “Hall Closet” to a 10′ by 20′ “3 Bedroom Apartment”, they never attempt upselling space you don’t need.

Another thing that sets MakeSpace apart is their protection plan. Every monthly membership has a basic protection plan included. These two practices alone would make most people ditch their shady storage company.

They solve your storage problems, from packing, moving, and retrieving. At a regular self-storage unit, you need to buy your supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap, etc.). Then you pack everything up, and finally, you deliver it yourself to the unit. With MakeSpace, you don’t deal with any of that hassle. Just tell the movers what gets packed up, and they put it in storage for you.

Their photo inventory is another vast improvement over traditional storage companies. The movers take pictures of every item you want to store. You can access this picture database at any time and request an item. No wondering if your childhood baseball mitt is in the trash, storage, or garage. Just check your inventory. MakeSpace also offers business plans perfect for solo-entrepreneurs and larger businesses with too many boxes lying around.

With traditional self-storage, you get a dusty metal box for an outrageous rate and zero customer support. With MakeSpace, you get a dependable storage solution. Their customer support is excellent, and they provide the exact amount of storage space needed. Your first time storing using their service is free with your monthly membership. After that, you pay a small fee to store more items.

While their competition is stuck in the 80s, MakeSpace has entered the 21st century.

  1. I’m new to makespace so wasnt sure what to expect at all. But the guys who came to get my stuff were super friendly and helped me get everything into the Makespace bags. Overall good experience. Give them a try if you need this type of storage service.

  2. I had a horrible experience with them. If you do a little bit of research you will find that it’s a terrible company, the worst one you can possible work with. All my boxes suffered damage. And they also lost one of the boxes. They were “kind” enough to reimburse me fully for the lost item but they misspelled the name so I cannot cash it in after waiting of almost 1 month for the check. The thing is that I have emailed them especially to ask for the name to be corrected in the system. I just don’t know what else I can say about them other than the fact that they have been utterly incompetent, careless and made my life a living nightmare.
